101 Brutally Honest Mark Manson Quotes

101 Brutally Honest Mark Manson Quotes

Recently, I read Mark Manson’s New York Times Bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life and had many epiphanies afterward. That book is amazing.

In fact, the entire book is a quotable masterpiece. I wish I could just copy and paste it all here, but I can’t. Instead, I’ve compiled a list of my 101 favorite Mark Manson quotes here in this blog post. (And I highly recommend you check out Mark’s book for yourself so these quotes can have a bigger impact on your life.)

I’ve mixed in a few Mark Manson quotes from some of his other books as well. I haven’t yet read Mark’s new book called Everything Is F*cked: A Book About Hope – but it’s on my list and you should consider it, too. The reviews are stellar.

Without further ado, here are 101 of my favorite Mark Manson quotes. These are life-changers, my friend!

We joke online about “first-world problems,” but we really have become victims of our own success. Stress-related health issues, anxiety disorders, and cases of depression have skyrocketed over the past thirty years, despite the fact that everyone has a flat-screen TV and can have their groceries delivered. Our crisis is no longer material; it’s existential, it’s spiritual.

For decades, research has tied gratefulness and appreciation to happiness. People who are happier tend to be more grateful and appreciative for what they have. The rare people who do become truly exceptional at something do so not because they believe they’re exceptional. On the contrary, they become amazing because they’re obsessed with improvement. And that obsession with improvement stems from an unerring belief that they are, in fact, not that great at all. It’s anti-entitlement. People who become great at something become great because they understand that they’re not already great – they are mediocre, they are average – and that they could be so much better.

We are so materially well off, yet so psychologically tormented in so many low-level and shallow ways. People relinquish all responsibility, demanding that society cater to their feelings and sensibilities. People hold on to arbitrary certainties and try to enforce them on others, often violently, in the name of some made-up righteous cause. People, high on a sense of false superiority, fall into inaction and lethargy for fear of trying something worthwhile and failing at it.

The ticket to emotional health, like that to physical health, comes from eating your veggies – that is, accepting the bland and mundane truths of life: truths such as ‘Your actions actually don’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things’ and ‘The vast majority of your life will be boring and not noteworthy, and that’s okay.’ This vegetable course will taste bad at first. Very bad. You will avoid accepting it. But once ingested, your body will wake up feeling more potent and more alive.

…here’s something that’s weird but true: we don’t actually know what a positive or negative experience is. Some of the most difficult and stressful moments of our lives also end up being the most formative and motivating. Some of the best and most gratifying experiences of our lives are also the most distracting and demotivating. Don’t trust your conception of positive/negative experiences. It’s strange that in an age when we are more connected than ever, entitlement seems to be at an all-time high. Something about recent technology seems to allow our insecurities to run amok like never before. The more freedom we’re given to express ourselves, the more we want to be free of having to deal with anyone who may disagree with us or upset us. The more exposed we are to opposing viewpoints, the more we seem to get upset that those other viewpoints exist. The easier and more problem-free our lives become, the more we seem to feel entitled for them to get even better.

‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ It is true. But there’s a better version of this quote, a version that actually is profound, and all you have to do is switch the nouns around: ‘With great responsibility comes great power.’ The more we choose to accept responsibility in our lives, the more power we will exercise over our lives. Everything worthwhile in life is won through surmounting the associated negative experience. Any attempt to escape the negative, to avoid it or quash it or silence it, only backfires. The desire to avoid rejection at all costs, to avoid confrontation and conflict, the desire to attempt to accept everything equally and to make everything cohere and harmonize, is a deep and subtle form of entitlement. Entitled people, because they feel as though they deserve to feel great all the time, avoid rejecting anything because doing so might make them or someone else feel bad. The truth is that there’s no such thing as a personal problem.
